Stick out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex is a quick-game man and zone beater built on the classic stick concept to the trips side. The three receivers to the trips run a vertical clear-out from the outside receiver, a corner route breaking outside from the middle slot man, and a swing route out of the backfield that settles as the low stick option, while the backside receiver runs a solo go route up the numbers. The RB stays in to help protect off the red arrow key, and the primary read progression starts with the stick/swing combo underneath before working up to the corner route and finally the backside go if the defense sells out on the quick throws.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the flat defender or cornerback sitting on the swing route, that tells you to work the stick or corner route immediately. If the middle linebacker walls off the stick concept in a Tampa 2 or Cover 2 shell, look to the backside go route for a one-on-one shot against a single high safety. Man coverage with no safety help over the trips side is a green light to hit the corner route as soon as it clears the linebacker level. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring a nano blitz off the edge get exposed by the swing route and RB protection, so read the running back's release for hot route confirmation. If you see two deep safeties with underneath zone defenders sinking hard on the stick, check down to the swing route for a quick, safe gain instead of forcing the ball into a crowded flat.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify if the defense is showing off-man or zone by checking the corner alignment on the trips receivers, this play punishes cushion coverage with the quick out breaking corner route.
Use the swing route as your built-in hot route answer versus overload blitzes off the edge since it releases immediately into the flat.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by hitting the corner route in the seam before the flat defender can carry it, since zone defenders often widen late.
Pair this play with Levels Out or Dagger from the same formation to keep the defense honest on shell rotation and force linebackers to respect both quick and deep routes.
Best called on second or third and short to medium, especially against defenses that show soft zone or bail coverage at the snap.
