Dagger out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex features a four man route concept designed to attack both intermediate and deep zones. The outside receiver at the top runs a vertical clear-out to stretch the defense deep, while the inner slot receiver runs a deep dig underneath it, creating the classic dagger vertical/dig combo. Underneath, one receiver runs a shallow drag crossing the formation and the flex tight end runs an out-breaking route to the flat, while the running back releases on a wheel route from the backfield, giving quarterbacks a five-level progression from deep to short.
Defensive Reads
Identify two high safeties pre-snap since Dagger is designed to punish single high shells like Cover 3 where the dig sits in the natural void. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker depth, since a shallow drop opens the deep dig but a deep drop opens the drag underneath. Key on user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, as they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down. Look for man coverage indicators like press corners or a linebacker matched on the running back, since the wheel route becomes a big play against man beaters that fail to pass off the wheel. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge, since the flex tight end out route and running back wheel are the quickest answers to beat pressure before the dig fully develops.
Usage Tips
Read the safeties pre-snap to identify single high versus two high shells before deciding whether to target the dig or the vertical.
Against Cover 3 the dig sitting behind the underneath zone and in front of the deep third is the primary read, so work the vertical route first to hold the deep defender before coming down to the dig.
Against Cover 2 the vertical route occupies the deep half safety, opening a throwing lane to the dig running through the seam behind the linebackers.
Use the HB wheel or the drag as checkdowns against pressure looks, since both give the quarterback quick outlets if the deep combo is covered.
Pair this play with Levels Out or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shot plays and quick horizontal stretches on early downs.
