Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 2 and opens the high-low read between the vertical clear-out and the dig. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or hook zone defender since a slow drop or wrong shade leaves the dig wide open for an explosive gain. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with extra deep help, since a sinking safety can undercut the dig route and bait a turnover. User-controlled defenders sitting in a shallow lurk technique in the middle of the field can jump the crosser, so be ready to climb the ladder to the dig or reset to the swing route.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the safeties to confirm two-high or single-high alignment before committing to the dig read.

Against Cover 3, hit the deep dig as soon as it crosses the linebacker level since the middle zone defender cannot cover both levels of the dagger concept.

Against Cover 2, work the high-low between the clearing vertical and the dig, since the deep safety can only take one.

If the corner sits low and jumps the underneath crosser, hot route the flexed TE deeper or reset to the swing route as a quick outlet against aggressive man coverage.

Pair this play with Levels Y Corner or Post Y Dig from the same set to keep defenders guessing between deep in-breaking routes and shallow crossers on early downs.

Use in second and medium or third and long situations where the defense is likely sitting in zone shells and giving up the middle of the field.
