RPO Alert Omaha is built out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex with a run/pass conflict read for the quarterback. Backside, the two receivers to the top of the formation run a vertical stem and a deep crosser away from the play while the flex TE runs a shallow angle route underneath, giving the quarterback a peek option if the defense sells out on the run fit. The playside end runs a corner route as the outside alert while the offensive line and backfield action set up an inside zone run read, making this a true RPO where the quarterback reads the second level defenders to decide between handing off and pulling to throw the corner or peek route. This concept is designed to beat aggressive run fits and light boxes rather than a specific man or zone shell, since the run and the corner alert punish overcommitment.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong side safety and outside linebacker pre-snap, if they cheat down into the box the offense will likely pull and throw the corner route. Key the flex TE angle route defender after the snap, a linebacker sinking too deep opens the underneath peek throw for an easy conversion. Man coverage on the outside receiver running the corner route is vulnerable if the cornerback bites on the run action, so user the deep defender to close that window. Zone shells with a hard rotation to the trips side can take away both the corner and the crosser, forcing the quarterback back into the run read. Blitzes that bring extra defenders off the edge can disrupt the mesh point before the RPO read develops, so time the snap count to bait the blitz early.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to decide whether to keep this as a run read or attack the corner route immediately.

If the defense shows six or more in the box with linebackers crashing downhill, pull the ball and throw the corner route before the flat defender can react.

Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig if you see zone coverage rotating away, since that opens a bigger throwing window against zone beaters.

Pair this play with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set so defenses cannot key run fits off formation tendency alone.

Best called on early downs in the 1st and 2nd and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to load the box against Trey Y-Flex.
