Breakdown

Scat out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex sends the boundary receiver on a vertical seam while the two inline receivers to the trips side run a corner and out combo off a natural pick, creating a high low stretch on the flat to deep defender. The flexed TE releases into a swing route out of the backfield while the HB kicks out on a check release flat route, giving the quarterback a built in dump off against pressure. This is a man beater that also stresses zone with the corner and out combo, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route, works to the out underneath, then bails to the flat and swing check down if the top of the read is covered.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first, if he sinks with the out route the corner route behind him is open against zone drops. Watch the deep half safeties, if they rotate late or bite on the underneath out, the seam vertical to the boundary becomes the explosive shot play. Against man coverage identify the cornerback's cushion on the number two receiver, a tight cushion means the corner route wins immediately at the top of the stem. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the throwing lane of the out route, this is the most common lurk spot that jumps this concept. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender crashing on the swing or flat route can shut down the check down, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer against a blitz look.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety pre snap because the corner route from the number two receiver will win over the top against man coverage once the corner rotates late.

If the defense shows Cover 2, hot route the outside vertical into a comeback or hold it since the deep corner will naturally split the two deep defenders on that side.

Use the HB flat release and TE swing as your built in answer against blitz heavy calls, this keeps the play on schedule on third and medium.

Pair Scat with WR Screen or HB Pump Draw in the same set to keep the defense honest against the flat routes before hitting the corner shot later in a series.

Motion is not shown in this diagram so rely on formation alignment and pre snap defender leverage on the number two receiver to decide between the corner and out read.
