Breakdown
Shock H Option comes out of Trey Y-Flex with three receivers bunched to the right and a single receiver to the left. Post snap, the backside X runs a deep vertical release into a corner breaking route while the right side has a stacked option route out of the backfield that sits down and works to the flat before climbing vertically outside, with the two inside receivers on that side clearing out on deep angle routes to the opposite corner and up the seam. The lone running back releases straight up the middle on a check release or seam read, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch read from the option route underneath to the vertical shots outside. This is a man beater built off the option route creating natural rub separation against man defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the H-back option route, then working to the vertical routes on the perimeter if the option gets no separation.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap. Single high signals more aggressive underneath coverage on the option, while two high shells open up the option route sitting comfortably in the void. Key the cornerback technique on the trey side. Press man alignment means the option route can be hot routed to attack immediately, while soft man or zone alignment favors letting the option settle and read leverage. Watch for user-controlled defenders dropping into the underneath option route lane. If the user lurks there, look immediately to the two vertical routes breaking outside for a big play. Track linebacker depth at the snap. Shallow linebackers crashing downhill on run action or blitzing off the edge open up the option route for an easy completion before help arrives. This play struggles against pattern-matching zone concepts like Cover 4 or Cover 6 where defenders can sink under the option route while still respecting the vertical routes, so be ready to check to a run play if that shell shows.
Usage Tips
Attack this play on third and medium to third and long when you need the option route to settle in soft zones or break away from man coverage for a chain-moving gain.
Pre-snap, check the corner alignment on the trey side. If you see press man, hot route the option route to a quick out to beat the jam immediately off the line.
Use the option route as your first read every time. It settles against zone and breaks away from man, so let the coverage shell dictate whether the receiver sits or climbs vertical.
Pair this with Levels Out or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing on option and quick game concepts before hitting them with the double vertical shot on the outside.
If the safety shows two high pre-snap, trust the option route working underneath since deep help will be split, and save the deep corner route for one high shells where the safety is occupied in the middle of the field.
