Breakdown

Inside Post Out lines up from Trey Y-Flex with three receivers stacked to the left and a lone flexed TE to the right. The trips side runs a layered stretch concept: the outside receiver drives an out at the sticks, the slot runs an inside post that stems through traffic toward the middle of the field, and the innermost receiver runs a shallow drag that clears underneath. On the backside the flexed TE runs a corner breaking route into the void vacated by the safety, giving the QB a two level answer if the defense overplays trips. The HB stays in to check release and slides into a flat/angle route off play action leverage, making this a man beater built around the post creating a natural pick/rub while the out and corner attack zone leverage on the perimeter.

Defensive Reads

Key the free safety pre snap. Single high alignment tells you the post has a clean lane, while two high shells signal you should lean on the out and corner routes instead. Watch the flat defender or corner on the trips side out route. If he sinks too deep, the QB should reset to the post as the primary window. Post snap, identify any user controlled defender flashing to the middle of the field. A lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the throwing lane to the post is the biggest threat to this concept. Against man coverage, look for the slot corner trailing the post route. If he is late off his break, the post wins immediately since there is no natural help underneath. If the defense brings a blitz off the edge opposite the trips side, expect the HB angle route to be the answer since the protection may not account for extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and medium when you expect single high safety looks, since the post is designed to split the safety and beats Cover 3 and Cover 1 hard.

Pre snap, check the strong safety depth over the trips side. If he is sitting shallow, throw the post with anticipation before he can undercut it.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route the drag into a deeper dig or work the backside corner route from the TE since the post window tightens against two high shells.

Pair this with Slot Post or Dagger from the same set to condition the defense to bite on shallow crossers, then hit the post over the top once they start jumping underneath routes.

Motion or shift the HB to check for man coverage before the snap. If a linebacker shadows him, the angle release out of the backfield becomes a built in check down against blitz looks.
