Breakdown

RPO Zone Alert Screen pairs an inside zone run with an alert screen to the backfield, giving the quarterback a true run-pass conflict based on second level defender behavior. If the linebackers crash downhill on the zone action, the QB pulls the ball and fires the screen to the alerted receiver with blockers already climbing to convince the defense the run is live. This is a zone beater at its core since it exploits linebackers who key the run flow and vacate their screen responsibility, and the primary read progression is pre-snap alert identification into a post-snap linebacker key: run the zone if backers stay honest, throw the screen if they flow hard.

Defensive Reads

Check pre-snap for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers sitting shallow, that alignment is exactly what makes them bite on the run key and opens the screen. Look for defenses playing Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers reading run first, since those shells often abandon screen lanes when they trigger downhill. If the defense shows a light box with only six or seven defenders and safeties rotating late, the run action itself becomes the better outlet against light run support. Beware user controlled linebackers or a lurking Mike who sits and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of crashing, that discipline kills the screen and forces you into the run. Man coverage with press corners on the perimeter can jump the screen route quickly since defenders are already turned and driving downhill, so favor the run read against man heavy looks.

Usage Tips

Identify the screen alert receiver before the snap and know which side the RPO logic favors based on box count and defender depth.

Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest, since a converted screen or a positive zone run both keep you ahead of the sticks.

Watch the Mike linebacker and weak side backer at the snap, if they crash on the run fake immediately pull and throw since your blockers are already releasing outward.

Combine this with Inside Zone and HB Slip Screen from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the screen tag without getting gashed by the actual zone run.

Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the screen blockers need time to set up and a fast rusher can blow up the whole concept before the alert develops.
