Stick Nod H-Angle out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex is a quick-game stick concept designed to attack the underneath zones and isolate a linebacker in man coverage. The backside receiver runs a vertical release up the sideline while the three receiver stack on the strong side runs the classic stick combo: a flat route, a nod (hitch and go) route sitting down at the sticks, and a corner route clearing out over the top. The RB releases out of the backfield on an angle route, giving the QB a built-in check down against a blitzing linebacker or a leaky underneath zone, with the primary progression reading nod to flat to angle before working the deep corner or backside vertical if the coverage bites down.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, if he widens with the flat route the nod route will have a throwing window underneath Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, aggressive blitzers will open up the angle route out of the backfield for an easy checkdown Against zone coverage look for the seam between the underneath zone and the deep zone where the nod route sits down Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be exposed by the backside vertical route if the corner bites on any of the underneath action This play struggles against a hard match zone with a linebacker spying the angle route, so avoid calling it into a defense that consistently drops a hook defender straight into that lane

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the stick nod gives you multiple easy completion options underneath the sticks

Check the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow expect him to jump the nod route so be ready to hot route the flat receiver deeper

Against man coverage the angle route out of the backfield is a great answer to a blitzing linebacker since it creates instant separation in space

Pair this play with Empty Stick or Shock HB Angle later in a series so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the angle route out of the backfield

If the safety shows two high pre snap, trust the nod route to sit down in the soft spot of the zone rather than forcing the deep corner throw
