Breakdown

Inside Post is a trips based dropback concept out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex with 11 personnel. The two inside receivers from the trips side run a corner-controlled combo where the middle slot runs a deep post breaking hard across the field while the outside trips receiver clears out on a deep in that sits behind the linebackers, and the third trips receiver runs a shallow drag underneath. On the backside the single receiver runs a bench route out of the break followed by a vertical seam up the sideline. The primary read starts with the post from inside out, working to the deep in behind it if the post is capped, then coming back to the backside vertical or the underneath drag as checkdown options against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Post snap watch for the middle linebacker or safety sinking into the post's throwing lane, that is the lurk defender you need to freeze with pump fakes or eye manipulation. Pre-snap check safety alignment, a single high safety shaded to the trips side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the post has a clean window against zone drops. Identify if the corner over the post receiver is playing outside shade or inside shade, inside shade forces you to work the deep in behind the post instead of forcing the post throw. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure off the edge, since the play relies on the quarterback having time to let the post fully develop downfield. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the post throwing lane, so check if the safety over the trips side is rotating down before committing to the post read.

Usage Tips

Attack single high shells with the post since the deep in behind it occupies the safety and linebackers, opening the post window against Cover 3 and Cover 1.

Use the backside vertical route as a hot read against man coverage on third and long, it isolates the outside corner with no safety help if the defense rotates to the trips side.

Motion check pre-snap by watching linebacker depth, if they sink hard to take away the post throw the deep in behind it since the same leverage that stops the post opens that window.

Pair this play with Slot Post or Dagger in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between inside breaking routes, then hit them with Empty Y Cross or WR Cross when they start jumping the post route.

Best used on second and medium to long or third and medium where defenses expect zone drops, since the post needs time to develop against soft zone shells.
