Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals zone coverage that opens throwing lanes for the over route sitting behind him. Watch the free safety's initial step after the snap, because if he bails hard to the post side you know it is Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the post has a numbers disadvantage deep. User the deep middle defender to take away the Y post first, forcing the quarterback to work the over route or check down to the flat. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties sitting on top of the post, so if you see two high safeties pre-snap, sit a linebacker underneath the crossing route instead of biting on the post. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can disrupt the timing of the post route before it develops, so a well timed nano blitz or interior pressure package is an effective counter.

Usage Tips

Look pre-snap for single high safety alignment before the snap, since the Y post has a clear window to split the safety and corner against Cover 1 or Cover 3. If you see two safeties deep and rotation toward the trips side, hot route the Y post into a shorter dig or bench route to avoid throwing into a squeezed window. Use the check release flat route as your answer against zone blitz looks where the underneath defenders drop late and the middle gets congested. Pair this play with Empty Y Cross or Dagger in the same set to keep defenders honest on the deep middle throw, then come back to Post Y Dig once the safety starts cheating toward crossing routes. This play shines on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to play zone coverage and give up the post shot.
