Verticals out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex sends both outside receivers straight up the field on vertical stems while the flexed Y (TE) runs a deep dig that crosses the middle of the field, and the slot receiver clears out on a deep in that settles as a shallow crosser underneath the dig. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline, giving you a five-man route distribution that stretches every level and both hashes. This is a true four verts concept built as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, attacking the seams and the deep middle void before defenders can rotate over the top.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down to one high, since this determines which seam or the deep middle will be open. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep middle hole (robber or Tampa 2 look), which can jump the dig route from the Y-Flex TE if you telegraph that throw. Look for corners playing outside leverage with no safety help behind them, that alignment gets exposed immediately by the outside vertical routes. Man coverage with linebackers matched up on the HB out of the backfield is a green light to throw the wheel route, since the HB should win on speed up the sideline. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the passing lanes and rob the shallow crosser, expect the underneath window to close fast and prioritize the vertical seams instead.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep with soft corners over your outside verts, this play is designed to split them right up the seams.
Your primary read progression starts with the seams on the outside verts, then works to the deep dig from the Y-Flex TE crossing the middle, and finally to the HB wheel as a check down against man coverage or blitz.
Against single high looks like Cover 3, target the deep middle void with the crossing dig route since the free safety cannot cover both seams and the middle at once.
Hot route the HB wheel into a flat route or check release if you diagnose a blitz, since the wheel takes time to develop and you need protection to hold up.
Pair this play with Dagger or Post Y Dig from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical stretches and intermediate breaking routes, forcing linebackers and safeties to hesitate on their run reads.
