Breakdown

Read Option lines up from Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel, showing a tight bunch of five offensive linemen at the core with two receivers split wide left and two split wide right, no true route concept run by the perimeter receivers since this is a run-designed play. The QB and HB are aligned in a mesh point read look behind the line, with the QB reading the play side defensive end to decide between keeping the ball or handing off, which is the core zone read run scheme. This is a run play built around the option read at the mesh point rather than a man or zone beater through the passing game, with blocking flowing to the play side based on the defensive end's crash or contain.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end first, if he sits home or squeezes hard down the line the QB should pull the ball and get outside. Watch for a spy or scrape exchange linebacker since that defender is designed to shut down the QB keep option. Overloaded fronts with an extra defender crashing the mesh point kill this play, so check the box count before the snap. Man coverage on the perimeter with press corners frees up run support since those corners will not sit deep, making the alley run heavier. User controlled defensive ends who stay disciplined and do not bite on the fake are the toughest defensive read to beat with this concept.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box.

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap since he is the primary read key for keep versus give.

Use manual motion or hot routes on the split receivers to force cornerbacks to declare man or zone before the snap.

Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Mid Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key on run tendencies from formation alone.

Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses often sit in base fronts and dare you to run the zone read.
