Fk Drive Stutter is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel, designed as a Cover 4 beater. At the snap the TE runs a drive route that stutters at the sideline before working underneath, one outside receiver runs a deep corner route up the sideline while the other sits on a quick out, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route that arcs from the flat toward the sideline. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to attack the seam vacated by a Cover 4 safety, then works down to the drive stutter as the settle option, with the HB wheel as the outlet against zone defenders who bite on the underneath crossers.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties split wide, that Cover 4 look is exactly what invites the corner route to work against a suspect flat defender. Watch the cornerback aligned over the corner route, if he is playing outside leverage with no safety help over the top, that route gets there in a hurry. Post-snap, track the flat defender or nickel, if he sinks too far under the drive stutter and ignores the HB wheel arcing to the sideline, that wheel route becomes wide open. A Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell with a robber underneath can jump the drive stutter route, so a user controlled linebacker sitting in that window is the biggest threat to this concept. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers can disrupt the timing of the corner route release, forcing the quarterback to speed up the progression to the drive stutter or wheel earlier than designed.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the safety depth to confirm two high safeties before committing to the corner route read since Cover 4 shells are what this concept is built to attack.
If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the drive stutter into a quicker break to shake off a trailing linebacker or nickel corner before the pocket collapses.
This play works best on second and medium to second and long, giving the QB time for the corner route to develop against a Cover 4 shell without needing a conversion on early downs.
Pair this with Drive Stutter Flat or Mesh Spot from the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical shot and the quick underneath game, keeping linebackers honest against the play-action fake.
Watch the HB wheel route as a checkdown against zone drops, it is a low risk answer if the corner route is blanketed and the drive stutter is jumped by an underneath defender.
