Mesh Clearout out of Shotgun Tight Open (11 personnel) sends both outside receivers vertical up the seams to clear out the deep coverage, while the two inside receivers cross underneath in a classic mesh combo. The single back releases to the flat as a red-lined check valve, giving the quarterback a built-in outlet if the mesh crossers are jumped by man defenders. This is a man beater at its core: the crossing routes create natural rub picks against man coverage while the two vertical clearout routes stretch zone defenders and open up space underneath for the mesh runners. The primary read progression starts with the shallow mesh crosser working left to right, then works to the deeper crossing route, and finally checks down to the back in the flat if both crossers are covered.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage without safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability here, since the clearout verticals occupy the deep defenders and leave the mesh crossers with a clean rub against man defenders. Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in a lurk spot underneath, since a user-controlled defender reading the quarterback's eyes can jump the shallow crosser and turn it into a turnover. Cover 2 with hard corners can jam the outside clearout routes and disrupt their timing, buying underneath zone defenders more time to react to the mesh crossers. Zone blitzes that bring a linebacker off the edge while dropping a lineman into a shallow zone can take away the checkdown to the back and force the quarterback into the crossers under duress. If the safeties bail early into deep quarters or Cover 4 shells, the clearout verticals will not draw them away, so expect the intermediate mesh routes to be more contested and require a tighter throwing window.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or in 2nd and medium situations where you have room to work the mesh underneath without needing an explosive gain immediately.
Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks pressed on the outside receivers or safeties showing single-high, since the clearout verticals will hold that safety and open the rub routes underneath.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone defenders sitting, hot route the outside vertical routes into quick outs or comebacks to attack the vacated intermediate zones the clearout creates.
Combine this play with Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers from the same set to keep defenders guessing on mesh depth and timing, then mix in Y Cross or Slot Post to hit the same clearout window with a different angle.
Against aggressive man blitz teams, trust the mesh rub to spring one of the crossers open fast and get the ball out before the pocket collapses, since the vertical clearouts remove any deep help.
