Mesh Clearout out of Shotgun Tight Open (11 personnel) sends two crossing receivers underneath in opposite directions to create the classic mesh traffic jam while a third receiver clears out vertically up the seam. The two outside receivers on the top of the formation run vertical stems to occupy deep defenders and clear space, while the running back releases into a flat route off the mesh action as the checkdown. This is a man beater built to spring picks and rubs against man coverage, with the primary read progression starting on the shallow crosser working away from pressure, moving to the underneath mesh crosser, and checking down to the flat route if the mesh routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the strong safety and free safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating over the top signals man coverage underneath which is exactly what this concept is designed to exploit. Watch for a linebacker sitting in the mesh area, that is a lurk defender designed to jump the shallow crossing routes and bait a quarterback throw. If the defense shows two deep safeties with corners playing off, the clearout vertical routes will have less impact and the mesh crossers may run into a sinking zone rather than picking through man leverage. Key the middle linebacker at the snap, a blitzing look through the A or B gap can collapse the pocket before the mesh routes develop, so be ready to climb the pocket or check down early. Against man coverage with no safety help over the crossers, expect defenders to trail through the mesh traffic, which usually creates the natural separation this play is built to generate.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners aligned tight with inside or outside leverage and a single high safety, since the mesh crossers thrive when defenders have to fight through traffic.

Use the hot route to adjust the flat route into a wheel route or drag if the defense shows heavy underneath zone coverage to give yourself a vertical answer against zone drops.

Snap the ball quickly once you diagnose man coverage, the mesh concept is designed to win fast against tight man before a spy or blitzer can close the mesh point.

Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the same crossing angle twice, forcing them to guess between traditional mesh and clearout variations.

On third and medium, trust the deep clearout routes to hold safeties and linebackers, then work the shallow crosser into open grass underneath for a quick conversion.
