Breakdown

Orbit Mesh Rail runs out of Shotgun Tight Open with pre-snap orbit motion from the backfield across the formation before the ball is snapped. At the snap, the two inside receivers cross underneath in a classic mesh, one sitting low and rubbing off the other before releasing outward on the rail/flat route while his mesh partner climbs vertically up the seam. Outside, one receiver runs a deep corner/flag route to clear the top of the defense while the far side receiver bends a deep in-cut over the middle, giving you a five-level stretch. This is a man beater built to create natural traffic and rubs through the mesh combo, with the primary read starting on the mesh crossers underneath before working up to the corner route if the defense collapses down.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker assigned to the orbit motion man pre-snap, if he mirrors across the formation it confirms man coverage and you should sit in zone drops instead to avoid the rub. Key the safety depth at the snap, if both safeties stay deep and split it is likely Cover 2 or Cover 4, which means you need to get physical with the mesh crossers early to disrupt the timing. User the underneath linebacker manually to sit in the mesh window and jump the shallow crosser, this is the single best way to shut down the play's primary read. Look for the corner route stem out of the break, a cornerback playing hard outside leverage in Cover 3 can undercut the flag route if he reads it early off the receiver's release. Trust your zone lurk defender to sink into the vertical seam route after the mesh clears, since that route sits right in the void that Tampa 2 and Cover 6 shells are designed to close.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap orbit motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and the mesh underneath will have a huge rub advantage.

Your first read is the mesh combo at the line to gain, if the shallow crosser is open off the rub take it immediately for a quick easy completion against man coverage.

If linebackers sink hard on the mesh, climb your eyes to the corner route on the outside since safeties biting underneath will open up the deep flag against Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells.

Hot route the deep in-cutting receiver into a sit route versus zone heavy defenses to give yourself a sure checkdown between the mesh and the vertical shots.

Pair this with Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the mesh action alone, then hit Orbit Mesh Rail when you see the defense flowing hard to stop the shallow crossers.
