Breakdown
Y Cross out of Shotgun Tight Open lines up three receivers to the left and a single receiver to the right with the HB releasing into the flat. The backside receiver runs a deep dig that clears out over the middle while the inside receiver on that side runs a corner route breaking outside, and the front side single receiver runs the namesake Y Cross, a deep crossing route that works from right to left across the field. The HB releases out of the backfield on a swing/flat route underneath to give the quarterback a checkdown against pressure. This is a man beater at its core, since the deep crosser and dig create natural picks and rubs against man coverage while also stretching zone defenders horizontally, and the primary read progression starts with the Y Cross working across the field, then moves to the deep dig behind it, and checks down to the HB in the flat if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he widens with the Y Cross it signals man coverage and you should sit underneath with a spy or robber defender Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, which usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the deep dig will have a soft spot to sit in against the zone If you see two deep safeties pre-snap, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and be ready to drive on the crosser with a user linebacker before it reaches the opposite hash Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be countered by getting a user defender to jump the HB flat route, since the quarterback will likely check down under pressure Lurk with a user linebacker in the shallow to intermediate middle zone to disrupt both the Y Cross and the HB flat, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and take a sack or force the dig into tight coverage
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap so you know whether to trust the crosser or work the dig
Against man coverage, ride the Y Cross all the way across the formation since the natural rub from the underneath crossers will separate it from trailing defenders
Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, hold the ball a beat longer and target the deep dig sitting down in the void behind the linebackers
This play excels on second and medium to long or third and long when the defense expects a dropback pass and sits in zone
Pair Y Cross with Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers from the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow mesh concepts and the deeper crossing shot, forcing linebackers to respect both levels
