Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Tight Open runs the classic Spot concept combined with a mesh crossers combo underneath. Two receivers on the left run a shallow drag and corner combo into a mesh crossing pattern while another receiver runs a flat route and the outside man runs a corner route to the boundary, with the backside receiver on the right pushing vertically up the seam on the go route. This is a proven man beater thanks to the natural mesh pick and also holds up against Cover 3 due to the flat and corner combo stretching the zone horizontally and vertically, with the primary read starting on the mesh crossers underneath before working out to the flat and finally up to the corner and vertical route on the boundary.
Watch for the underneath linebackers sitting in the middle of the field, since they can jump the mesh crossers if they read the quarterback's eyes early and undercut both shallow routes. Cover 3 defenses with disciplined curl to flat defenders can take away both the flat route and the corner route by staying patient and not biting on the initial mesh action. Man coverage with tight press corners can disrupt the timing of the mesh crossers before they reach full speed, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and take a sack or throw off platform. A user controlled defender spying the middle of the field or lurking in the shallow zone is the biggest threat to this concept since he can jump the crossers without respecting the flat route. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play before the mesh crossers develop, since the concept takes a full one count to clear and needs a clean pocket.
Start your presnap read on the deep half safeties to determine if you are facing Cover 3, Cover 1, or Cover 4, since the mesh crossers will pick off man defenders and the flat to corner combo attacks zone drops.
If you see two high safeties rotate down to Cover 1 or Cover 0 at the snap, key on the mesh crossers immediately since natural picks against trailing man defenders create easy separation.
Against zone shells like Cover 3, work the progression from the flat route to the corner route since the flat defender has to choose between the crosser and the flat, opening a window for the sit route underneath.
Use the vertical route on the backside as a hot route to a hitch or slant if you diagnose a hard blitz look with the slot cornerback or nickel crashing downhill.
Pair this play with Bench or Y Cross earlier in a series so defenders start jumping the mesh action, then hit Zipper Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers off similar formation looks to keep the defense guessing on which crosser to jump.
