Z Spot Dig runs a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Tight Open with a dig route sitting behind an underneath spot combo. On the diagram you can see the outside receiver to the left running a deep out to the boundary, the inside slot running a corner route up top, and the third receiver running a dig that settles across the middle at intermediate depth. The X receiver to the right runs a shallow crossing route under the dig while the flat route from the backfield area kicks outside, giving you a layered Cover 3 beater with a clear progression: read the dig first, then work down to the shallow crosser and flat as checkdowns.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety looks since a single high shell tells you the dig has more room to work against Cover 3 zone drops. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because a fast flow to the flat route opens the dig window immediately, while a linebacker sitting in the hook zone can jump the route and bait a user pick. Key the nickel or slot corner on the shallow crosser route since a rerouting defender there disrupts the timing of the dig and forces a late read. If the defense shows Cover 2 with squatting corners, the deep out from the outside receiver becomes vulnerable to a jump throw, so check for a user controlled corner sitting on that route before committing to the dig. Beware disguised zone blitzes where the defense drops an extra man into the intermediate area since that can clog both the dig and shallow crosser at the same time.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells where the dig route can sit in the soft spot behind the linebackers and in front of the deep safeties.
Use pre-snap motion or a hot route on the flat route to create a natural rhythm read if the defense shows zone drops with light underneath coverage.
Against man coverage, look to the corner route or the deep out first since the dig will get picked off by trailing linebackers or nickel defenders in press alignment.
Pair this play with Bench Z Spot or Orbit Z Spot in the same set to keep the defense guessing on shell rotation since the route concepts look similar pre-snap but attack different zones.
Best called on second and medium to third and long when you need a defined intermediate window and want the quarterback progressing from the dig to the shallow crosser quickly.
