Breakdown

Redzone HB Scissors lines up out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel and creates a classic scissors concept on the boundary side while the field side runs clearout verticals. The outside receiver on the scissors side crosses underneath while the slot receiver breaks opposite off the same landmark, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a crossing route to the flat as the shallow underneath option. Both backside receivers run vertical clearout routes to pull coverage away, making this primarily a man beater that exploits crossing traffic and picks, with the scissors combo as the top read and the HB flat route as the checkdown against man coverage or blitz.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage is the primary vulnerability here since the scissors crossing action creates natural rubs that are difficult for man defenders to navigate cleanly. Watch for a hard corner or safety sitting at the top of the scissors route stem, since a user controlled defender jumping the crossing route can undercut the throw before it develops. Cover 2 shells struggle against this because the underneath crossers occupy the flat defenders while the corner routes stretch the deep half, so look for the safety rotation to confirm. Cover 4 with aggressive match principles can also be exploited if the linebackers fail to carry the crossing routes through their zone, leaving a soft spot in the middle of the field. Zone defenses with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes are the biggest threat, since they can undercut the scissors concept and jump the HB flat route.

Usage Tips

Use this near the goal line or in tight redzone situations where the compressed field forces defenders into man coverage or tight zone drops.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the scissors side, since the crossing routes rely on natural picks that man defenders struggle to fight through.

If the defense shows press man on the outside receiver, expect the scissors action to spring the slot man free almost immediately off the line.

Hot route the HB to a quick flat release if you diagnose a blitz look, since he serves as your built in hot read against pressure.

Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Mesh Crossers from the same set to keep defenders guessing between overlapping crossing concepts, then mix in Verticals HB Burst to punish aggressive underneath jumps.
