Breakdown

Speed Option out of Shotgun Tight Open is a true option run play where the QB reads the play-side defender off the edge before deciding to keep or pitch to the HB. The diagram shows the QB and HB running in tandem to the play side with the RB trailing slightly behind and outside, giving the QB a clean pitch angle. The offensive line blocks down inside to seal the interior gap and let the perimeter defender dictate the option read, making this a pure numbers-based run scheme rather than a man or zone beater in the passing game sense. The primary read progression is the first unblocked defender outside the tackle box: crash him and pitch, or have him sit and keep it upfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defenders showing outside contain responsibility pre-snap, if the end or OLB is squeezed inside with no true edge player, the option pitch lane is wide open. Nano blitz packages and edge pressure looks that send extra defenders off the corner shut this play down fast since they collapse the option before the QB can make his read. User-controlled defenders who spy the QB or sit on the pitch key can bait a bad decision, so watch for a defender staying square instead of committing to crash or contain. Cover 3 and other one-high shells with light boxes are vulnerable since the extra hat in the secondary cannot get to the alley in time to help the edge defender. Look for linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers flowing hard downhill will overrun the option and open a cutback lane if the QB keeps it inside.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and short when defenses expect pass out of 11 personnel shotgun looks, since the option action punishes aggressive run fits.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the play-side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they are crashed hard inside or shaded wide you already know which way the numbers favor.

Use the left or right hot route flick to run the option to the perimeter defender who is showing the softest edge, especially against 4-3 fronts with an overhang defender out of position.

Pair Speed Option with Read Option and Inside Zone from this same set so the defense cannot key run fits off formation tendency, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their assignment.

Avoid this play into heavy blitz packages where extra defenders are stacked outside the tackle box, since the pitch lane collapses fast if the alley is crowded.
