This is a man beater built to create natural picks at the mesh point, so the primary read starts with the shallow crossers working the rub, then progresses to the deep comeback if the mesh gets jumped or a defender trails into the picks.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with off corners is the easiest shell to attack here since the shallow crossers will rub off defenders at the mesh point almost automatically. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, because a user controlling that defender can jump the crossers and blow up the primary read before it develops. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers sinking underneath the mesh point tend to shut this down since zone defenders simply sit and wait rather than chasing routes through the traffic. Usage Tips

Presnap, check for man coverage indicators like a single high safety with corners playing tight press, since the mesh point picks are far less effective against zone drops that will simply pass off the crossers. If you see two safeties deep and off man corners, hot route one of the shallow crossers into a shorter option route or lean on the deep comeback route instead of forcing the mesh. Use manual motion or a quick shift presnap to identify if a defender is shadowing across the formation, which confirms man and tells you the mesh rub will work. On third and medium, trust the shallow crossers since the rub almost always creates separation against man, but on third and long lean on the deep comeback for the bigger chunk gain. Pair this call with Mesh Spot or Mesh Clearout from the same set so the defense has to respect both a spot concept and a full crossing concept, keeping linebackers and corners guessing on route depth after the snap.
