Breakdown

Spacing out of Shotgun Tight Open sends five receivers into a horizontal ladder of quick hitches and outs designed to stretch the underneath zones sideline to sideline. Both outside receivers run hitches at the sticks while the two inside receivers (slot and TE) sit down in the flat area just outside the hash, and the lone red route in the middle is a quick out or drag that occupies the shallow zone hole. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built to exploit zone defenders who have to choose between two horizontal threats stacked at nearly the same depth, and the primary read progression works from the outside hitch to the inside flat route, working backside if the underneath zone flows away from the initial read.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender on either side pre-snap, if he is sitting at five yards or less he is likely a robber against the shallow route and will jump the flat throw. Watch the corner depth at the snap, soft zone corners who backpedal will open a throwing window on the outside hitch immediately. Against Cover 3, the middle linebacker's drop determines whether the shallow crossing route or the flat route is open, so track his eyes and hips after the snap. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability for this concept, since the horizontal stems give defenders in man an easy jump on the route. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure off the edge, since Spacing has no max protect answer built in and a five man rush against four blockers forces an instant checkdown or sack.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since every route breaks at or before the sticks and the ball can come out in under two seconds.

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 quarters, since both flat defenders and curl to flat players get stressed by the double stack of receivers on each side.

If the corner is playing off and soft, throw the outside hitch immediately off the snap for a free completion before the underneath defender can climb.

Hot route the backside inside receiver into a speed out or seam if you see man coverage, since Spacing's built in routes are optimized for zone and can get picked off by aggressive man corners.

Pair this play with Stick or Mesh Spot in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between low, quick zone beaters and man beater crossers, forcing linebackers to declare their coverage shell before the snap.
