Zipper X Spot is a Cover 3 beater built around the classic Spot concept, combining a corner route, a spot/hitch settle, and an underneath flat or drag to attack the seams of a three deep shell. The Zipper motion or tight alignment helps identify man versus zone before the snap while the blocking scheme protects with a standard five man pass pro look, keeping the RB in as a check release option. The primary read progression starts at the corner route working the flat defender or curl to flat player, then works down to the spot sitting in the hole vacated by the underneath zone defender, and finishes with the quick game route as the checkdown against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap, since Cover 3 with a single high safety is the shell most vulnerable to the corner and spot combo. Watch the curl to flat defender at the snap. If he widens to the flat immediately, the spot route sitting underneath will be wide open in the void he vacates. Key the middle linebacker's drop depth. Shallow zone drops from the Mike clog the spot route window and force the quarterback to work outside to the corner or check it down. Man coverage with press corners and a robber safety can jump the corner route, so look for a defender sitting in the middle of the field reading the quarterback's eyes as a sign of a lurking user in the shallow zone. Disguised blitz packages with late linebacker drops can bait the quarterback into the spot route only to have a spy or delayed zone defender undercut the throw, so respect any pre snap alignment that shows extra pressure but drops out at the snap.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium when you expect zone coverage, since the spot route is designed to sit right in the Cover 3 curl to flat void.

Check the safeties pre snap. Two high shells mean you should look to the corner route first since the flat defender will likely widen and open the honey hole underneath.

Motion the Zipper man across pre snap to force a coverage rotation reveal. If the defense follows with a linebacker or DB, you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and should hot route your spot runner into a quick out or speed cut to separate.

Pair this with Mtn X Spot or Dig Z Spot in the same set to keep the defense guessing between corner breaking routes and dig concepts off similar formations, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Against aggressive user blitzers, use the RB check release as a built in answer and get the ball out fast, since the spot concept is designed to punish overpursuit and delayed underneath drops.
