Breakdown

Zipper X Spot is a Spot concept pass play out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel, built to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells with a triangle read. The Spot combo on the X side gives you a corner route, a flat route, and a hitch or spot route underneath, creating a natural stretch on the curl-flat defender while the backside occupies vertical space. Your primary read progression starts with the flat defender to determine if the underneath spot route is open, then climbs to the corner route sitting behind the curl defender, and comes back down to the check-release or dump-off option if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Cover 3 is the primary shell this beats because the flat defender cannot cover both the underneath spot route and the flat, leaving the corner route or the spot route open depending on depth of drop. Watch the curl to flat defender at the snap, if he sinks deep to take away the corner route the underneath spot route will be sitting wide open for an easy conversion. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable if the defense does not disguise a blitz, since the spot route naturally settles into space that man defenders struggle to mirror. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can bracket the corner route so be ready to check down quickly rather than force that throw into a shrinking window. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow spot area as a lurk defender, since aggressive users will jump the underneath route and rob your first read, forcing you to progress immediately to the corner route.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the corner is playing off or bailing into a deep third because that tells you if the corner route on the Spot side will have a throwing window against Cover 3.

If you see two deep safeties rotate down to one high post snap, hot route the underneath spot route into a quick option route to beat man coverage leverage.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the underneath and intermediate combo routes give you a high floor conversion option even if the corner route is taken away.

Pair this with Mtn X Spot or Dig Z Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense sees the same backfield action and route stems but has to respect a different breakpoint, keeping linebackers honest.

Against teams that user the flat defender aggressively, look off the flat route with your eyes to freeze that defender and create a throwing lane for the corner route behind him.
