HB Mid Zone

Breakdown

HB Mid Zone is a inside zone run concept out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel, designed to attack the interior of the defensive front with a hybrid zone blocking scheme. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, creating movement and letting the HB press the line before making a one cut based on where the double team or seal block develops. Your primary read progression starts at the play side double team block: if the defensive tackle gets pushed off the ball, cut vertically through the A or B gap, but if the backside cutback lane opens due to overpursuit, bounce it back for a bigger gain.

Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker depth before the snap, since a stacked or crashing MLB signals an aggressive run fit that HB Mid Zone can gash with a cutback if he overruns the play side gap. Watch for 6-1 or heavy fronts with a nose tackle shaded to the play side A gap, because a good zone blocker combo can still generate movement, but a disciplined nose who holds ground can clog the primary rushing lane. Identify blitzing linebackers who shoot gaps immediately at the snap, this is the biggest threat to HB Mid Zone since one-cut runs are vulnerable to penetration before the line can set its zone blocks. Look at safety alignment, a single high safety who bites down hard on run action leaves the defense susceptible to a cutback lane if the HB reads the backside correctly. Beware user-controlled defenders spying the A gap or B gap, since a smart human defender sitting in the hole can blow up the timing of the one cut and force a negative play, so mix in play-action or RPO looks from this same formation to keep him honest.

Usage Tips

Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts before the linebackers start keying run on early downs, since this play thrives when the front seven has not committed to stacking the box.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into shifting gaps, which widens the cutback lane on the backside for HB Mid Zone.

Pair this run with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same Tight Open set so the defense cannot key blocking angles based on formation tendency alone.

On third and short or first and ten, call this after establishing Read Option or Same Side Zone earlier in the drive so linebackers respect the mesh point and hesitate on their run fits.

User the fullback or TE blocker at the second level to manually seal off a blitzing linebacker if the CPU logic whiffs on the assignment, especially against nano blitz packages up the middle.
