Drive Stutter Flat comes out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel and shows a two receiver bunch look on the left with a drive concept, a slot receiver running a deep drive route from the numbers all the way across the field, and the outside receiver on that side running an under route behind it to clear the shallow zone. On the right side the tight end runs a deep drive route across the field while the outside receiver on that side releases into the flat, and the HB stutters out of the backfield into the flat as a checkdown or man beater against linebackers. This is a pass play designed to attack Cover 4 shells by stretching the field horizontally with two crossing drive routes, and the primary read progression starts with the far drive route working across the field, then comes back to the near drive route, and finally checks down to the HB flat route.
Pre snap, check safety depth and spacing, two safeties split deep signals Cover 4 which this play is designed to beat with the crossing drive routes Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to take away the drive routes the HB flat becomes the easy answer against man or zone Beware user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat or hook zone since they can jump the HB stutter release or the underneath drive route if the quarterback is late This concept struggles against Cover 6 or Cover 2 with an aggressive underneath zone since defenders can rally to both drive routes and the flat simultaneously Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the stutter release from the HB doubles as a built in checkdown against pressure but only if the quarterback recognizes it quickly
Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect a zone shell like Cover 4 or Cover 3 since the double drive concept is built to sit in the soft spots underneath those coverages
Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, if so expect Cover 4 and trust the drive routes to find grass between the linebackers and the corners
Hot route the HB flat route into a quick flat or seam if you see man coverage on the running back since the stutter release can get picked off by an aggressive user linebacker
Sequence this play with Bench or Bench Z Spot to keep defenders honest on the flat and shallow crossers, then come back to Drive Stutter Flat once the defense starts jumping the underneath routes
Against zone heavy defenses, key on the far side drive route first since it is the primary read, and only work back to the near drive or HB flat if the deep crosser is not open
