Mtn Flood H-Choice is a Cover 3 beater out of Shotgun Tight Open with 11 personnel that stacks three vertical stems on the right side of the field into a true flood concept. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route stretching the sideline, the TE or slot works up the seam and breaks outside on an out route, and the H-back runs a choice route underneath that reads the flow of the flat defender. On the backside, the receiver runs a deep drag across the field while another receiver clears out on a deep vertical, giving the quarterback a simple high low progression starting with the flood side corner route, working down to the H-choice underneath if the corner and flat defenders squeeze the deep ball.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap since that usually signals Cover 3 and opens up the corner route on the flood side. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the H-back the choice route should sit down inside for the throw. Key the deep third defender to the flood side, if he opens his hips late the corner route will win over the top for an explosive gain. Against Cover 4 or Cover 6 look for the safety to carry the corner route deep, which should trigger a quicker progression down to the H-choice or backside drag. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk spot near the choice route zone can jump the underneath read, so be ready to move to the backside drag as a checkdown if that user is triggered.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 3 shells where the flood side corner route can climb over the deep third defender before he gets width. Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender and curl to linebacker, if they cheat outside the H-choice route can settle inside for an easy conversion. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser if you diagnose man coverage to create natural separation off the rub. Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a defined progression that attacks all three levels of the field. Pair this with Mtn X Spot or Mtn Curls Out N Up in your play calling sequence so the defense sees similar flood shells and cannot jump the choice route with pattern recognition. Against zone blitzes, get the ball out on the H-choice quickly since it is the built in answer to underneath pressure.
