Zipper Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Tight Open lines up with two receivers to the left running a deep in-and-up combo and a shallow spot route underneath, while the right side runs a classic mesh with a short crosser sitting under a corner route breaking outside. The backfield player releases into a flat route away from the mesh side, giving the quarterback a five-man route distribution that stresses both hook zones and man coverage with natural rub picks. This is a man beater built around the mesh crossers creating traffic for defenders in man coverage, with the spot route underneath serving as the first read against off coverage and the corner route as the field-stretching outlet.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage defenders that trail the mesh crossers too tightly will get picked, so look for the natural rub to spring one of the crossers open immediately after the mesh point. Cover 3 defenses with a single deep safety are vulnerable to the deep in-and-up route on the outside since it climbs vertically right into the seam behind the corner. If the defense drops a linebacker into a deep hook zone underneath the mesh crossers, that linebacker can sit on the shallow crosser and take away the easy completion, so check the spot route instead. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking near the mesh point in man coverage, since a smart user can jump the crossing routes and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge opposite the backfield flat route can win quickly, so the quarterback needs to get the ball out fast to the spot route or flat route if the protection breaks down.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect man coverage since the mesh concept on the right side is designed to rub off man defenders in space.
Pre-snap, check for two deep safeties versus one high safety. Against a single high safety, prioritize the deep in-and-up route on the left since it attacks the void between the corner and the safety.
If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3, work the spot route underneath first since it settles into the void between the flat defender and the hook defender.
Hot route the backfield flat route into a check release if you are getting pressure off the edge and need extra protection on max protect downs.
Pair this play with Bench Z Spot or Y-Spot Salem in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between mesh concepts and spot concepts out of similar formations.
