Defensive Reads

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and give the ball on the run if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, since that tells you the slant window is likely staying closed by numbers alone.

Key the flat defender and the inside linebacker level with your eyes on the snap, if either sits and reads run, snap to the slant throw immediately for a free access completion.

Use the slant hot route to convert it into a quick hitch versus press man corners who are jamming the release, this keeps the timing consistent against tight coverage.
