Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is in man coverage by checking if the outside corner follows the blocking WR upfield, which opens the screen throw behind him. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot near the screen side, since that defender can jump the throw and blow up the play. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers flowing hard to the run fake are the most vulnerable to this concept. Fast flow blitzes or nano blitzes off the edge can beat this play if the RB flare release is not quick enough to get outside the rush.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and let the run alert trigger if the defense shows six or fewer in the box.

Use the right stick or hot route to speed up the slot screen route if you see a corner sitting soft outside the numbers.

This play shines on early downs and short yardage third downs since the screen picks up easy yards against overpursuing linebackers.

Pair this play with RPO Read Screen or RPO Peek Slant in the same set to keep defenses guessing between run keys and quick pass keys.

Sequence this with Inside Zone or Inverted Veer earlier in a drive so the defense bites on the run fake and opens up the screen lane.
