Y Flat Goalline is a quick-hitting bunch concept out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty designed to attack tight red zone or goalline windows. The bunch releases with the isolated X receiver on a deep vertical up the sideline, while the Y and inside slot run a stacked combo: one climbs to a deep out breaking toward the boundary, the other settles into a quick flat route underneath. The lone receiver away from the bunch runs a short out to the boundary as a checkdown or hot route conversion, giving the QB a high-low flat read against tight coverage. This is a man beater built for goalline and short yardage situations, with the primary progression starting at the flat route for the pre-snap conflict defender, then working up to the deep out, then to the backside boundary route if the bunch is jumped.
Pre-snap, key the defender aligned over the bunch closest to the line, if he is showing outside leverage he is likely keying the flat route. Watch the safety depth over the top, a single high safety cheating toward the boundary route side signals Cover 1 or Cover 3 and opens the flat and deep out combo underneath. Post-snap, track the flat defender's first two steps, if he sinks to cover the deep out the flat route is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. This concept struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a hard corner sitting on the flat and a safety rotating down, those looks take away the easy underneath read and force a longer developing throw. Beware of a user linebacker spying the flat or a disguised blitz with a defender crashing the flat pre-snap, that look can jump the route for a big momentum swinging turnover in goalline situations.
Use this play inside the 5 yard line or in true goalline packages where the defense is playing tight man coverage with limited deep help.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or a hard zone rob at the flat, if a defender is sitting on the flat route hot route the backside boundary route to a quick out for an easy pitch and catch.
The flat route wins fastest against Cover 0 and Cover 1 blitz looks because the conflict defender has to choose between the flat and the deep out breaker, exploit that indecision immediately.
Pair this with Z Spot Goalline and Z Mesh Goalline from the same set to keep the defense guessing between flat, spot, and mesh concepts near the goal line without changing your formation tendency.
Snap the ball quickly once you see the flat defender bite, this play is designed for a fast release and does not hold up well if the QB has to hold the ball against pressure.
