Mesh HB Sneak Dig lines up out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty with a bunch tight to the formation and a single receiver working an isolated route on the backside. At the snap the two shallow bunch receivers cross underneath in a classic mesh, rubbing man defenders off each other around 3 to 5 yards, while a third receiver climbs up and over the mesh into a deep dig that sits down in the middle void. The HB sneaks out late from the backfield as a checkdown/drag option working the opposite flat, giving the QB a layered progression from mesh crossers, to the dig sitting down over the top, to the HB leaking out late. This is a man beater built around natural picks, with the dig serving as the zone beater answer if the defense sits in soft zone. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers for a quick throw against man leverage, moves to the dig if a linebacker or safety bites on the underneath crossers, and checks down to the HB sneak against a delayed blitz or if both are covered.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and means the dig route will have to sit down in a shorter window rather than sitting deep. Key the middle linebacker's initial drop, if he sprints to the mesh crossers immediately it usually means man coverage and the dig behind him should come open. Identify if the defense runs a spy or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, since that user controlled defender is the biggest threat to jump the mesh crossers and bait a turnover. Check corner alignment on the bunch side, tight press corners with no safety help over the top suggest man coverage where the natural pick on mesh will spring a receiver free. Watch for delayed edge pressure or an overload blitz off the HB's release side, since that pressure package is designed to beat the sneak route before it becomes a viable checkdown.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like press corners or a single high safety rotated late, since the mesh concept thrives on natural picks against man defenders trailing in space.
Hot route the dig runner into a deeper sit read against Cover 3 or Cover 4 if the underneath zone defenders are sinking too fast and taking away the shallow crossers.
Use the HB sneak as your answer versus overload blitzes, since he releases late and gives the QB a hot throw when the protection is about to break down.
Pair this play with Mtn Mesh Cross or Choice Shallow Dig in the same set to keep the defense guessing between mesh depth and the number of crossers, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drop reads.
Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium when you expect man coverage or a blitz look, since the mesh crossers create natural rubs and the dig punishes late linebacker drops.
