Breakdown

Mtn Y Corner Under is a bunch-based pass concept out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty that attacks the field with four distinct route levels. The bunch receiver runs a deep corner route breaking outside, the Y (tight end) releases vertical then bends into a corner route from the middle stack, a third receiver runs an under route crossing the field flat to give a quick underneath outlet, and the backside X sits on a shallow drag toward the boundary. This is a man beater built to create natural picks at the bunch and stress a single deep defender with two corner routes stacked on the same side, with the crossing under route serving as the primary read against man coverage or a hot throw versus pressure.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety cheating to the bunch side telegraphs man coverage and opens up the double corner routes for a big play. Watch the cornerback aligned over the bunch, if he is playing outside leverage with no safety help behind him the corner routes will win quickly. Postsnap key the underneath linebacker responsible for the crossing under route, if he sinks too deep the under route sits wide open for an easy completion. Look for user-controlled defenders jumping the shallow drag or under route, which usually signals man coverage and means the deep corner routes have single coverage on the backside. This concept struggles against a true two high shell with a robber underneath, since the extra safety can bracket the corner routes and the robber can undercut the crossing route.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense is showing single high or two high, since the double corner concept to the bunch side is most effective against single high shells where one safety cannot cover both corners. If you see man coverage with no help over the top, work the double corner combo immediately because the natural traffic at the bunch creates rub opportunities. Against zone shells with underneath defenders sitting on the flat, use the crossing under route as your first read since it settles in space against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops. This play works well on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense is more likely to play zone and give up the under route for a quick completion. Pair this with Mtn China Cross or Mtn Mesh Cross from the same set to keep defenders guessing between crossing routes and vertical corner shots off similar bunch alignment.
