X Cross is a bunch-based crossing concept run from Shotgun Bunch X Nasty with 11 personnel. Off the bunch alignment, one receiver runs a deep dig back across the field while a second receiver clears out on a deep over route to the opposite sideline, and the third bunch receiver runs a shallow drag underneath through the formation. The lone receiver to the boundary side runs an outside release go/vertical to stretch the corner and hold the safety, while the backfield stays in to protect. This is a man beater built on natural picks created by the bunch traffic, with the shallow drag as the primary read against man coverage and the dig becoming the answer versus zone once the linebackers flow with the drag.
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting the drag, jump the route with a user defender to bait the QB into the dig read. Press coverage on the bunch receivers disrupts the natural rub timing, making this play far less effective, so bring extra press corners or a bail technique to the bunch side. Zone drops with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle can undercut both the drag and dig routes, since they occupy the same intermediate window. Blitzing off the edge away from the bunch attacks the empty backfield protection quickly, forcing a rushed throw before the crossing routes develop. Cover 3 with a hard flow to the drag side leaves the deep dig and outside go isolated on man principles, so a deep half safety needs to stay disciplined and not overcommit to underneath traffic.
Presnap, check for man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside the bunch or a linebacker cheating over the top, since the bunch traffic creates natural rubs that stall man defenders.
Your first read is the shallow drag out of the bunch, it should come open almost immediately against man coverage due to the pick action, so get the ball out fast on a quick trigger.
If the defense drops into zone, look to the deep dig sitting down in the intermediate middle void behind the linebackers who bit on the drag or flowed with flow.
Use the outside go route as a hot route to a comeback or hitch against soft corners playing off coverage, this keeps the boundary receiver involved instead of just clearing space.
Pair this with Mesh Spot or Mtn Mesh Cross in your play calling sequence, since both punish the same bunch alignment differently, forcing the defense to guess between drag, mesh, and dig concepts on early downs.
