Whip Double Spot lines up out of Bunch X Nasty in Shotgun with a bunch alignment to one side. The bunch receivers run a layered spot combo, one whip route settling underneath, one spot route sitting at the sit zone, and a corner-breaking route working outside, while the backside X runs a deep whip route across the field to clear out and stretch zone coverage horizontally. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 by flooding the underneath and intermediate windows on one side while the backside whip gives you an outlet against a rotated shell. Primary progression starts with the underneath whip/spot combo working the shallow-to-intermediate zone voids, then works to the corner breaking route, and comes back to the backside whip route as a check-down if the zone drop takes away the initial reads.
Watch the flat defender on the bunch side, if he sinks with the corner route you have the whip and spot underneath wide open. Key the middle linebacker's drop, a heavy hook zone drop can clog the spot route so be ready to reroute that read to the outside corner breaker. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety sitting deep middle, this concept has a strong answer versus that shell. Man coverage with underneath linebackers matched up tightly on the bunch can jam these routes, so if you see man alignment pre-snap consider hot routing the whip to a quicker breaking route. Watch for a disguised blitz off the edge opposite the bunch, since the backside whip route takes time to develop and can be vulnerable if the protection is beaten before the route clears the underneath traffic.
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing a 3 deep 3 under shell, since this concept is built specifically to exploit the seams that Cover 3 leaves underneath.
If the corner over the bunch shows hard outside leverage, expect the flat defender to jump the whip route, so be ready to work the spot route sitting behind him instead.
Use motion or a quick glance at the strong safety depth to confirm if it is a single high shell before the snap, since two high shells can bracket the corner route and force you to the backside whip early.
Pair this play with Mtn Corner Under or Mesh Spot from the same set to keep defenses guessing between underneath crossers and the double spot flood look.
This play works best on second and medium to long or third and short to medium, where defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage and give you access to the sit and spot windows.
