Y Option Pivot runs out of Bunch X Nasty with a boundary receiver on an outside release into a deep vertical/corner combo up top, while the bunch side runs a pivot out of the stack that breaks flat toward the sideline and a middle receiver runs a hard seam up the field before settling, creating a natural option read against man or zone leverage. The lone backfield player stays in to help protect, keeping this a pure dropback passing concept rather than play-action or RPO. Primary progression starts with the seam/vertical route up the middle, then works to the option pivot breaking to the flat, and finishes with the outside vertical/corner as the deep answer if the defense sinks underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side signals man coverage underneath, which favors the option pivot winning quickly to the flat. Watch the flat defender's alignment off the bunch; if he sits too deep or too wide, the pivot has an easy conversion for positive yardage. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing to the middle seam route, since that traffic can open up the pivot or the outside vertical if the defender bites too hard. Zone defenses that spot-drop with linebackers sitting under the seam are vulnerable to the option pivot breaking outside the numbers before the flat defender can react. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep corners sinking on the outside vertical will take away the top of the route, so be ready to check down to the pivot as the primary answer against those shells.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high shell or two deep safeties, since that dictates whether the seam route or the pivot becomes your first live read.
Against man coverage, trust the option pivot to win versus outside leverage corners by breaking away from the defender's momentum, especially on third and short to medium.
If you see off-man or zone with a hard flat defender, hot route the pivot receiver to break away from that defender's landmark before the snap so he does not sit in a passing lane.
Use this play after establishing Double Outs or Mtn Slot Middle from the same bunch look so linebackers and corners start jumping shorter routes, then hit the deep vertical against a defense selling on underneath throws.
Save this concept for third and long or two minute situations where the deep outside route can be a chunk play answer if the underneath option gets taken away.
