Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty runs a standard zone blocking scheme with the HB taking a lateral read step off the play side guard before pressing into the line for a vertical cut. The bunch alignment with the extra Y and TE (Nasty) stacks bodies to the play side, giving the offensive line double team leverage at the point of attack against base fronts. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the primary read progression is the frontside combo block into the linebacker fit, working backside cutback lane only if the frontside gap is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for a stacked box with eight or more defenders near the line since that signals the defense is loaded to stop Inside Zone specifically. Look at the Mike linebacker alignment, if he is shaded to the bunch side he is likely reading the zone flow and will fill the frontside gap fast. Post-snap, key the defensive tackle's first step, if he crashes hard down the line he can blow up the frontside combo block and force a negative play. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker spying the mesh point, aggressive lurk players will jump the handoff read and need to be countered with a hard cutback. This run struggles against interior blitzes and A-gap pressure packages, so avoid calling it into known blitz downs like 3rd and short against aggressive defensive tendencies.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest and set up your explosive pass game out of the same Bunch X Nasty look.

Check the defensive front pre-snap for base 4-3 or 3-4 alignments since Inside Zone loses value against heavy 46 or bear fronts that stack extra bodies inside the tackles.

Watch the play side linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting tight in the box expect a quick fit and be ready to bounce the run outside using the natural cutback lane.

Pair this with Mtn Outside Zone or QB Sweep from the same set to keep the defense guessing between inside and outside zone tracks without changing your formation tendency.

Use manual control on the HB after the handoff so you can press the frontside gap and cut off blocks in real time instead of letting the CPU logic pick a bad lane.
