Stick Spacing Switch is a bunch-based pass concept out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty that switches release the bunch receivers to confuse man coverage while creating natural spacing against zone. Off the bunch, one receiver runs a quick out to the flat, another sits down on a stick route with an inside-out arrow read, and the third works a hard corner breaking away vertically for the switch release. The backside X receiver runs an isolated deep out to the boundary, giving the quarterback a full-field high-low progression: read the stick and flat combo first on the bunch side, then work backside to the X out if the underneath is covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is playing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since Cover 4 and Cover 3 shells are the primary vulnerabilities this concept attacks. Watch the flat defender on the bunch side post-snap, if he widens with the flat route it opens a throwing lane to the stick sitter working the underneath void. Key the corner assigned to the switch release route, if he trails through traffic without help over the top this play wins immediately on the rub. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the shallow hook zone, since a disciplined defender there can jump the stick route and cause a turnover if the quarterback is late reading the switch. Beware of man blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the switch release takes time to develop and a fast pressure package can force the quarterback off his first read before the rub concept fully separates.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is showing zone or man before the snap since the switch release exposes man defenders who try to stay in phase across traffic.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by working the stick to flat combo, since the flat defender is forced to widen while the stick sitter finds the void underneath the curl or hook zone.
If you see a single high safety with corners playing tight man, prioritize the switch release corner route out of the bunch since it creates natural rub traffic that man defenders struggle to fight through.
Hot route the backside X out to a hitch or quick slant against aggressive man press corners if you need a faster underneath answer versus blitz looks.
