Breakdown

Flanker Drive out of Bunch X Nasty (Shotgun, 11 personnel) attacks Cover 4 shells with a drive concept stacked underneath a vertical shot. The bunch receiver on the point runs a corner route up the seam to stretch the deep quarter defender, while the two stacked receivers cross underneath on drive routes that pick and settle to beat man coverage. The remaining bunch receiver clears out on a deep post/streak from the backside to hold the safety, and the drag from the opposite side crosses the field as a fast checkdown option. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against the deep quarter defender, works down to the drive/crossing routes underneath if the coverage rotates down, and finishes with the drag as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the free safety is shaded to the bunch side, that alignment tips Cover 4 and signals the corner route will have a defender waiting deep. Watch the underneath linebackers at the snap, if they widen with the drive routes instead of sitting in a zone drop you are likely seeing man coverage and the pick action underneath will spring someone open. If the defense shows two deep safeties who rotate down hard after the snap, that is a Cover 2 tendency and the drive routes underneath become the primary answer instead of the corner. A user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag lane can jump the crossing route, so if you see that flash come off the drag and trust the corner route or the underneath drive route on the opposite side. Blitz-heavy calls that bring extra rushers off the edge will remove a deep defender from the corner route responsibility, so a hot pressure look pre-snap should push your eyes immediately to the vertical shot for a big play.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when you expect Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells since the corner route is designed to split the seam defender and the deep half safety.

Check pre-snap for a single high safety cheating late; against Cover 3 or Cover 1 look, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route to punish the middle void.

Use the drive routes underneath as your man beater rep, the natural pick action at the stack forces contact and creates instant separation against press or off man.

Pair this play with Mesh Corner or Mtn Corner Under in the same set so the defense sees a similar bunch release and has to guess between the flat drag and the vertical corner shot.

On 3rd and long, trust the corner route first since it is the highest leverage explosive read, then bail to the drive concept if the safety jumps the corner route.
