Y Corner Pivot is a route from Shotgun Bunch X Nasty that attacks the boundary out of a tight bunch alignment. The bunch receivers run a deep crosser to the opposite sideline, an out breaking route to the flat, and a corner route from the inside bunch man that pivots outward toward the sideline (the red route), while the backside X runs a deep in breaking dig across the field. The primary read progression starts with the Y corner pivot route working the flat to deep corner leverage, then works backside to the crossing dig if the corner is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Check the corner alignment on the bunch side pre-snap, if he is playing outside leverage the corner pivot route has an easier time stacking him vertically. Identify the deep safety pre-snap, a single high look means the corner route will draw help late while two high looks favor the crossing dig underneath. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the throwing lane of the corner pivot, that is the biggest lurk threat on this concept. Zone defenses that widen their flat defender open up the pivot route immediately, so key the flat defender's first two steps after the snap. Man coverage with underneath help tends to shut down the pivot break, so if you see man match principles pre-snap be ready to progress quickly to the backside dig.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the corner pivot route stresses the deep quarter of the field and creates a natural pick with the bunch releases.
Hot route the flat runner to a flat or curl if you see a defender sitting underneath the corner pivot to bait him and open a throwing lane.
This play excels on second and medium to second and long since the dig route needs time to develop across the field.
Pair this call with Double Outs or Stick Spacing Switch earlier in a series so defenses respect the quick game before you hit them with the delayed corner break.
Snap the ball with tempo against zone defenses to prevent linebackers from sinking under the pivot route before it breaks outside.
