RZ PA X Whip is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty designed to hit underneath defenders sitting on run action near the goal line. The diagram shows the X receiver running a whip route, breaking outside then snapping back inside against the grain to shake off man coverage, while the two remaining bunch receivers clear out with flat routes to the boundary, and the offensive line executes play-action run blocking to sell the fake. The primary read progression starts with the whip route as the QB rolls off the fake, then works to the flat routes if the whip is jumped or covered underneath.
Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback over the X receiver pre-snap, tight outside leverage signals man coverage that the whip route is built to defeat. Key the linebackers depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play-action fake the whip route will have a clean throwing lane underneath. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties, since this play struggles against sturdy zone drops that clog the middle of the field. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the whip route breakpoint, as that is the biggest threat to disrupt the throw. Beware disguised zone blitzes off the edge, since the play-action fake can bait extra rushers and put the QB under pressure before the whip route develops.
Usage Tips
Call this play in the red zone or short yardage situations where defenses are primed to bite on run action.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like a corner shaded outside the X receiver, since the whip route is designed to break away from that leverage.
If you see a heavy box or linebackers creeping up expecting run, trust the play-action fake to hold defenders and open the whip window.
Hot route the flat routes deeper if you see a Cover 2 shell rolling underneath, since the whip route will get squeezed by an underneath zone defender.
Pair this play with HB Base or Counter Y from the same set earlier in a series to condition the defense to respect the run, then dial up RZ PA X Whip to punish overaggressive linebackers.
