Mtn Smash Sluggo is a motion man beater out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty with 11 personnel. The bunch receiver motions across the formation on the shallow drag/cross route (teal) to help identify man coverage and clear underneath space, while the two remaining bunch receivers run the smash concept: a corner route sitting at the sideline (gold, breaking outside at the numbers) paired with a flat/hitch route sitting underneath (gold, breaking outside from the stack). The X receiver on the backside runs a sluggo (slant and go) straight up the seam off the post-snap window created by the corner’s vertical stem. The primary read progression starts with the sluggo against man coverage for the explosive shot play, then works to the smash combo (corner over flat) if the safety rotates to take away the deep route, with the motion drag as the checkdown against blitz or if both outside reads are covered.
Watch the cornerback over the sluggo receiver pre-snap: if he is playing tight man technique with no safety help over the top, jump the slant portion of the sluggo route with a user defender before the go phase develops. Key the safety rotation after the snap: if the safety sinks hard to the corner route landmark, the sluggo has a clean vertical seam behind him, so a deep half or deep third defender needs to widen and stay disciplined on any post-snap movement. Identify if the defense follows the bunch motion man across the formation pre-snap, which confirms man coverage and tips off both the sluggo and corner as live man beater threats. Use a robber or lurk defender underneath the smash flat route to bait the quarterback into a checkdown throw, since the flat route sits shallow and is a low-risk target the offense may take under pressure. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and deep third corner can take away both the flat and corner routes, forcing the quarterback to rely solely on the contested sluggo throw down the seam.
Use the pre-snap motion to distinguish man from zone before the snap: if the defender follows the motion man across the formation, you have a clean man beater read on the sluggo and corner routes.
Attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with the smash concept since the corner route is designed to sit behind the cornerback and in front of the safety, exploiting the seam between them.
Take the sluggo shot on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to play single high or man coverage, since the double move punishes aggressive corners jumping the slant.
If the defense shows heavy pressure looks or blitz, get the ball out quickly to the motion drag or flat route as a built-in answer against extra rushers.
Pair this call with Mtn China Cross or Mtn Mesh Cross earlier in a series so defenders start biting on shallow crossing action, then hit them with the sluggo for a big play once they overplay the underneath routes.
