Z Spot out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty is a classic Cover 3 beater built around the spot concept on the bunch side. The three receivers to the bunch run a corner route, a deep dig sitting behind the linebackers, and a low settle spot route underneath, while the backside runs a vertical seam or wheel to stretch the field. The running back releases into the flat opposite the bunch for a checkdown, and the primary read progression is spot to dig to corner, working underneath to over the top as zone defenders flow toward the flood side.
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, which confirms Cover 3 and tells you the spot concept has a clean throwing window underneath the corner route. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat linebacker post-snap, since their depth and width determine whether the settle spot or the dig is open first. If the defense rotates to Cover 2 or shows two deep safeties, expect the corner route to be capped, so shift focus to the dig sitting in the intermediate window. Beware of user-controlled linebackers sitting in the shallow spot zone or lurking underneath the dig, as this is the most common way defenders bait quarterbacks into a pick against this concept. Fire zone or Cover 1 robber looks with an extra rusher off the edge can collapse the pocket before the dig or corner develop, so have a quick spot-to-flat checkdown ready as a bailout.
Pre-snap, look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a single high safety since the spot concept is designed to exploit the hole between the underneath zone defenders and the deep third corner. If the defense shows Cover 2, hot route the spot runner into a quick option route to sit down in front of the flat defender before he can jump the throw. Use this on third and medium to short situations where the settle route and dig create easy conversion windows against zone drops. Pair this call with Mesh Spot or Double Outs from the same set to keep the defense guessing between underneath spacing and deep shot combos. Against man coverage looks, check to Post Wheel Shallow or Y Option Pivot instead since Z Spot is not built to win against tight man leverage.
