HB Base is a straightforward dive run out of the Shotgun Bunch X Nasty set, designed to hit downhill between the tackles. The lone route on the diagram shows the HB releasing vertically as a check-release or safety valve if the run is blown up pre-snap, but the actual design is a hand-off with the RB following the mesh point path shown by the red arrow into the line. This is a run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the blocking scheme relies on the offensive line and TE to seal the interior gaps while the RB reads the initial hole created by the down blocks. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the line of scrimmage and identify the first crease off the double team look before bouncing outside if the alley is clogged.
Watch for stacked box fronts with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, since this signals a run blitz that can blow up the dive before the back gets to the mesh point. If the defense shows a bunch-matched man coverage look with a linebacker spying the backfield, expect quicker downhill pursuit and less room to bounce outside. Zone coverage shells with safeties rotating late tend to leave the box light, which is the ideal trigger to call this dive since it means fewer defenders filling run lanes. Look for a defensive tackle shooting an A gap or B gap pre-snap, which indicates a gap exchange or nano blitz designed to stop interior runs like this one. User-controlled defenders sitting in the hole rather than reacting to blocking flow are the biggest threat, so be ready to cut back if you see a spy camping the primary gap.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium distance to stay ahead of the chains without being predictable.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling out or motioning the HB to check the numbers before the snap.
Use the left analog stick to press the hole and let the blocking develop rather than juking immediately, since this is a gap scheme dive that needs one clean cut.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Mtn Outside Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing between different run schemes off identical formation and personnel looks.
Sequence this after a few passing plays like Mesh Spot or Stick Spacing Switch so linebackers are sitting deeper in coverage and slower to fill run gaps.
