Drive Y Corner runs out of Bunch X Nasty in Shotgun with a stacked trio to one side. The corner route from the bunch stem outside cornerback climbs vertically and breaks toward the sideline to attack Cover 4 and any hard outside leverage, while the drive concept underneath sends one receiver on a deep in crossing the field and another settling on a shallow drag through the formation. The backfield receiver runs a flat route to hold underneath defenders, giving the quarterback a clear vertical progression from the corner route down to the drive-in and finally the flat as a checkdown, making this a zone beater designed to stress the deep quarter defenders and any linebacker sinking into the drive window.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, two high safeties tipping Cover 4 or Cover 2 is exactly what this play is designed to attack with the corner route. Key the flat defender or overhang, if he widens quickly with the flat route the drive in behind him becomes the primary window. If you see man coverage with the cornerback pressed on the bunch receiver, expect this play to be tougher to complete deep and lean on the underdrive and drag concept instead. Look for a user controlled lurk defender sinking into the drive in route, since this concept is vulnerable to a linebacker sitting in that intermediate crossing lane. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and deep third corner can squeeze the corner route, so check if the deep defender is sinking under the vertical stem before throwing.
Use this against two high safety shells like Cover 4 or Cover 2 since the corner route is designed to split the deep quarter defenders.
Pre-snap, check if the cornerback over the bunch is playing outside leverage, if he is sitting hard outside the corner route will have room to break open against zone drops.
Hot route the flat route to a flat or drag if you see man coverage across the board so you are not relying on the corner beater versus a defender with a head start.
Pair this with Mtn Y Corner Under or Y Corner Pivot in the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick pivots and the deeper Bunch X Nasty corner shot.
Best called on second and medium to second and long where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, giving the quarterback time to work through the corner to drive in progression.
