Drive HB Under is a Cover 4 beater out of Bunch X Nasty in Shotgun that layers a deep crosser with an underneath drive concept to attack zone drops. From the bunch alignment, the outside receiver runs a deep dig that crosses the field while the middle bunch receiver drives underneath across the formation, and the third bunch receiver releases vertically up the seam then breaks outward on a corner/flat route. The HB checks protection out of the backfield before working an under route across the line, giving you a layered high-low read on one side of the field. Primary progression starts with the HB drive route underneath, then works up to the crossing dig, with the flat route as a late outlet against soft zone drops.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals he is keying the HB drive route and will jump the underneath crosser. Watch the deep safeties for rotation, if they stay split in a two-high shell the dig route crossing behind the linebackers should have a clean throwing lane. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops, key the flat defender because a slow width drop opens up the corner/flat breaking route for an easy pitch and catch. If you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB, expect the drive route to get picked up quickly and look immediately to the deep crosser for separation. Blitz-heavy defenses with a nano blitz package can disrupt this play before routes develop, so check protection or slide the HB into a check-release role if you see extra rushers stacked at the line.
Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing a two-high or single-high safety shell since this play is built to punish Cover 4 and other zone coverages that funnel underneath. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the bunch, hot route the HB drive into a quicker option or check to a different play since the crossers can get clogged by man-to-man traffic. Use this on second and medium or third and short situations where the HB under route can pick up easy yardage against a defense sitting back in zone. Pair this with Drive Y Corner or Mtn Drive from the same set to keep the defense guessing on whether the underneath or the corner route is the primary target. If the defense starts jumping the HB drive route after a few reps, sequence in Mesh Spot or Choice Shallow Dig to attack the same underneath area with a different look.
