Dig Return is a five-man route concept out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty that uses pre-snap motion to shift the bunch look before the snap. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical clear-out while the middle bunch receiver breaks on a dig across the field, and the two receivers to the play side of the diagram run a return route paired with a shorter drag underneath, creating a natural high-low read against zone drops. This is primarily a zone beater thanks to the dig sitting down in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties, though the return and drag combo also gives you answers versus man coverage if the defense sticks with man match principles. The primary read progression starts with the dig coming across the middle, then works to the return route on the boundary if the underneath defenders squeeze the dig window.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two-high shells with safeties sitting at ten to twelve yards signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which gives the dig runner room to work but invites a jump from a user-controlled safety. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap because if the linebackers sink quickly into zone drops, the dig window tightens and you need to bail out to the return route on the boundary. Key any defender shadowing the pre-snap motion man since that confirms man coverage and tells you the drag underneath becomes a quick answer against blitz pressure. This concept struggles against a hard Cover 3 buzz where a linebacker or safety sits directly in the dig lane, so if you see a defender cheating to that spot before the snap, be ready to climb the ladder to the vertical clear-out instead. Nano blitzes or interior pressure packages can disrupt this play quickly since the quarterback needs time to let the dig develop, so account for A-gap or B-gap pressure with a hot route on the running back if needed.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you to speed up your progression to the dig. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, trust the dig to sit in the soft spot between the linebacker level and the deep safeties, especially on second and medium or third and short. If the middle of the field is clogged by a robber or a spy, hot route the drag underneath into a quicker option to beat the blitz. Pair this play with Mtn Speed Dig Under or Speed Dig from the same set to keep defenses guessing on timing since both concepts attack similar windows but with different depths. Sequence this play after running Inside Zone or Counter Y to bait linebackers into cheating up before coming back to the dig for an explosive gain.
