Breakdown

Corner Out Dig is a bunch based dropback pass out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty that stresses one side of the field with three distinct route depths. The outside receiver from the bunch runs a corner route up the boundary, the middle bunch receiver breaks on a dig across the middle, and the third bunch receiver releases outside on a quick out. The lone receiver to the backside runs a wheel route out of the backfield area for a checkdown or manbeater against man leverage, while the offense uses this concept as a man to man beater thanks to the natural rub action created by the tight bunch splits. Primary progression starts with the corner route as the deep shot, works down to the dig sitting behind linebackers, and checks down to the out or wheel if the top of the read is covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shading toward the bunch signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and opens up the corner route. Watch the flat defender assigned to the bunch, if he widens with the out route it opens a throwing lane for the dig behind him. Identify if a linebacker walls the dig route in Cover 2 or Tampa 2 shells, since that coverage takes away the middle read and forces a check to the wheel or out. Man coverage with press corners is vulnerable to the natural rub created by the bunch alignment, so blitzes or man match schemes can disrupt this concept if defenders anticipate the pick. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle or lurking on the dig route, since that is the biggest threat to this play's main progression read.

Usage Tips

Use pre snap motion out of the bunch to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap.

If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, throw the corner route on time for an explosive play.

Against zone coverage look to the dig route sitting in the soft spot behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties.

Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Double Outs in your play calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between horizontal stretch concepts and vertical shot plays from the same bunch look.

Best used on second and medium or third and long when you need a defined progression that attacks all three levels of the defense.
