Counter Y out of Shotgun Bunch X Nasty is a power run play built around a counter blocking scheme with the offensive line pulling and kicking out the edge to spring the HB. The bunch alignment with a TE and receivers stacked tight helps mask the run action and creates natural traffic for linebackers flowing to the play side, while the pulling guard and lead blocker set up the point of attack. This is a base run concept, not a man or zone beater, and the primary read progression is one and done: get downhill, read the kick out and lead blocks, and identify the crease created by the counter action.
Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment since Counter Y wants linebackers flowing hard so the counter action can cut back against their pursuit. Watch for a heavy box count or an extra defender crashed down near the bunch, which signals the defense is sitting on the run and daring you to throw. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they squeeze down and blow up the kick out block, which kills the play immediately. User-controlled defenders who stay home in the backside gap instead of flowing with the counter action can blow this play up for a loss. Against aggressive blitz packages, the counter action can freeze overpursuing defenders, but disciplined gap defenders who hold their assignment are the biggest threat to this run.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have numbers in the run fit before the snap.
Attack defenses that show heavy blitz looks or overload one gap, since counter action punishes fast flowing linebackers who overrun the play.
Pair this with Inside Zone or QB Sweep from the same Bunch X Nasty set so defenses cannot key run direction based on formation alone.
Save Counter Y for early down-and-distance situations like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short where defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel.
If the defense shows a stacked box or heavy safety rotation down low, check to a play-action or RPO concept from this set like RPO Zone Alert instead of forcing the run.
