Breakdown

Zone Wk is a weak side inside zone run out of the I Form Wing set with 22 personnel. The offensive line flows to the weak side with the running back reading the FB lead blocker and the play side wing tight end for the cutback or bounce lane, while the fullback leads through the hole to seal off the first defender. This is a pure run play designed to attack gaps created by zone blocking flow, not a play-action or RPO look. The primary read progression starts with the FB lead block, then the RB reads the frontside gap before working backside if the defense overcommits.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with linebackers stacked over the tackles, since that alignment can clog the frontside zone lanes. Watch for a strong safety creeping into the box pre-snap, which signals an eight man front designed to stop inside zone runs like this one. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. If he flows hard with the zone blocking, the cutback lane opens for the RB to counter back against the grain. User controlled defenders flying downhill from a linebacker spot can blow this play up quickly, so avoid calling Zone Wk against aggressive user blitzers unless you have a hot route or check ready. Defenses in a 46 front or heavy run blitz packages with both A gaps filled will shut down the frontside lane, forcing the RB to bounce outside where speed at linebacker becomes the deciding factor.

Usage Tips

Run Zone Wk on early downs like first and second and short to medium distance to keep defenses honest against your pass game out of I Form Wing.

Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth and alignment. If both linebackers are stacked tight to the box, expect a quick fill and consider bouncing the run outside with the RB.

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early, which opens up the cutback lane on the backside of the zone blocking scheme.

Pair Zone Wk with HB Lead or FB Dive from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between frontside and backside gap runs.

Mix in PA Boot Flow or PA Sprint HB Flat off this same look later in the series once the defense starts crashing down hard on early down runs.
