PA X Burst Cross runs a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before releasing three receivers into a layered crossing concept. Off the fake, the X receiver runs a deep vertical burst up the seam while the two remaining receivers work opposite direction crossers underneath, one shallow drag and one deeper in-cut crosser settling into the void. The blocking backs sell the run fake to freeze second-level defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the deep vertical burst on any single-high look before working down to the crossing routes underneath if the shot is covered.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose single-high versus two-high safety alignment pre-snap since that dictates whether the deep burst route is live. Watch the play-side linebacker depth after the run fake, if he sits shallow the crossers will have room to work underneath him. Identify man coverage on the X receiver, if the corner is playing tight man the vertical burst can win over the top on a double move look. Key any user-controlled defender flowing toward the crossing routes since a lurking Mike or Sam linebacker can undercut the shallow drag. Watch for a delayed blitz disguised as run support, if the defense sends extra rushers after biting the play-action fake the quarterback needs a quick answer underneath.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs after establishing HB Lead or HB Power O so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.
Check for single-high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 before the snap since the deep burst route wins big against those looks.
If you see two-high safeties, be ready to work the crossing routes underneath instead of forcing the deep shot into a deep half defender.
Hot route the shallow drag into a quick option route against man coverage to give yourself a rhythm throw if the defense disguises pressure.
